Best stepping stone to a research job?

In our July “how can we help you?” thread, ‘Stepping Stone’ asks:

[I]f one is looking to land a research job, is it better to apply from 1) a teaching/lecturer job at a more prestigious university or a 2) research job from a much less prestigious school?

This is an interesting question, and I’m curious to hear what readers who are ‘in the know’ think!
