Robert Grosseteste (ca. 1168 – 1253), Bishop of Lincoln from 1235 to 1253, was one of the most prominent and remarkable figures in thirteenth-century English intellectual life. A philosopher, theologian, and student of nature, Grosseteste also translated and commented on works by Aristotle and Greek patristic thinkers. He played a pivotal role in the development of Aristotelianism, being among the first Latin philosophers to incorporate theories of Avicenna and Averroes, while also drawing heavily from Augustine.
