This is an important and timely book. It focuses on the undeniable fact that in our current partisan—or as I would put it, extremely tribalistic—political environment, knowledge about political matters is hard to come by. It is clearly written, lively, and deals in a balanced and nuanced manner with complex matters.

Blake Roeber’s skepticism is qualified in two ways: He focuses only on political beliefs and he acknowledges that in rare cases we can have knowledge of political matters. There is a confusion or rather a disjointedness, however, at the core of the book. Roeber defines the political knowledge that he says we can rarely have as knowledge that is needed “for one political party to secure and sustain political control.” But the examples he…
