During the last twenty years or so a new sub-discipline has arisen at the borders of philosophy and theology: analytic theology, the study of theological doctrines with an eye on the techniques of analytic philosophy—for instance, meticulous terminological disambiguation; the examination of theological assertions by looking for counterexamples; and particular care about logical coherence. The last of these has issued in its own rather surprising cottage industry: an exploration of the possible role of true contradictions in theology—since, after all, concern about coherence might naturally lead to concern about cases in which coherence seems an unattainable goal.
